Exclusions with get_categories()

I’m trying to exclude a few post categories from the ‘recent posts’ at the bottom of the page at our church website using $categories = get_categories('hide_empty=0&orderby=name&show_count=1&exclude=3,4,12,47');, as demonstrated on the WP how-to here.

Can someone point me to what I’m doing wrong?
