Excluding parent but not child pages?

I have a website with a parent page the client has no need for, but wants sub-pages underneath it. That’s fine I hear you say, replace with a custom link in the navigation.
However, in the sitemap, it shows the original ‘parent’ page which is unpopulated. Is there a way to stop this page from showing in the sitemap, but still allow pages nested below it to display?
