I am not a coder so need simple help please.

I have this plugin working OK to make both internal and external links open in a new tab. However, it also opens all the menu items ( ie pages and posts) in new tabs too which I don’t want it to do.

Obviously the exclusion categories are meant to deal with things like this but I don’t understand them and I can’t find anything on the internet to explain to me the classes for navigation and posts so that I can learn how to set the classes to be excluded.

The coding examples given in the FAQ don’t make any sense to me I am afraid. I have read all the posts on this forum but I haven’t found the help I need.

  • @marywt can you provide the link to your website?

    It is https://visionforsidmouth.org/

I had the picture circles on the home page set to open in new tabs before I tried this plugin so nothing has changed there.

As a lot of the site is refernce related we have both internal and external links in the text body of many pages and posts which I want to open in new tabs. However it is very annoying when looking at the posts and moving on to earlier or later ones to have them opening in new tabs. See here https://visionforsidmouth.org/letting-grass-verges-grow/ where the bottom of the page allows you to step to the next post.

I always remember to set the link information when I make the link but not everyone who posts does, so I have unnecessary work checking what has been done.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

@marywt, for those bottom links, that are generated dynamically from the theme, can you add class to those links, so everytime the page generate them it will put the class and so you can exclude them from the plugins settings.

OK, I understand that the bottom links are generated by the theme, and presumably the same is true for all the menu items.

But after that you have lost me ?? I do not understand what you are asking me to do.

How would I add classes to the links? This is what has puzzled me all along. Can I find classes for the links in the code somewhere? Can I find classes for the menu links somewhere? If not then what do I do?

Then of course there is the problem of putting the right things in the exclusion box without breaking the site!

@marywt you have to edit the PHP theme file to add it there. It’s just adding a class. It will not break anything.

At your theme folder, You should have a file that is responsible for generate that part. Most themes have a filter for those so you don’t need to edit the file. I don’t know the theme, so I cannot help with that part without looking into it, and in fact, that is already out of the scope of our support.
