Excluding Categories

I’ve checked the forum and all the options but nothing has worked.
I’m attempting to include only category that equals recipe and exclude any that equals blog. I’ve tried all of these options and nothing has worked.
[catlist ID=recipes, -blog excerpt=yes orderby=date]
[catlist ID=recipes,-blog excerpt=yes orderby=date]Help?
