Dear Rank Math SEO Support Team,

I am reaching out regarding a concerning issue I’ve encountered with my website’s SEO performance, specifically related to Google Webmaster Tools.

I noticed that my site has a significant number of “Excluded by ‘noindex’ tag validation failed” errors, totaling 221 instances.

Here are some key points to consider:

    1. WordPress Tags Excluded: The pages in question are WordPress tags, which ideally should not be indexed.
    2. Sitemap Exclusion: These tags are not included in the sitemaps.xml file.
    3. Meta Settings Confirmation: The meta settings for tags are configured to ‘noindex,’ indicating that they should not be indexed.
    4. Persistent Issue: Despite these measures, the number of errors continues to increase.

I am seeking guidance on how to resolve this issue effectively.

    Thanks in advance

ps i have read the blog on your website to let you know I am aware of that. The questions are:

    1. Should I allow search engines index wordpress tags?
    2. if not, should I ignore google’s warning?
    3. if not, what should i do?

    Hello @marbs,
    ?
Thank you for contacting Rank Math support.
    ?
Google must be discovering the tags from the internal links. Since they are set to Noindex, they are being reported under the “Excluded by noindex tag” status. You can add the following rule in your site’s robots.txt file to prevent Google from crawling the tag URLs:
    Disallow: */tag/*
    ?
Here is how to edit your site’s robots.txt file using Rank Math:?https://rankmath.com/kb/how-to-edit-robots-txt-with-rank-math/

    Dear @rankmathsupport,

Thank you for your reply. I’m still unsure what to do with my tags.

I write music reviews and create tags for the artists, linking their names to these tags. Additionally, I link to the music genre and specify tags based on whether the artist is male or female for the best user experience. Tags serve solely to display related content. Should I use the disallow and noindex tags since I am linking to those pages in my articles?

    Awaiting your reply,

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello @marbs,?
    ?
Tags are usually a type of page that has very thin content and it can consume tons of crawl budget if you have a lot of them.
    ?
That’s why on most websites, we recommend setting the tags to be noindex so they don’t consume so much crawl budget that could be allocated to more relevant pages.
    ?
It will also help to avoid potential duplicate content issues and dilution of your website’s authority.
    ?
    Looking forward to helping you.
