  • You can use a plugin, or change the_content by the_excerpt in your index.php.

    Of course I know that! I want to add a custom word limit and not display the “Read More” link if the post length is less than the word limit I specified.

    I use this plugin. It allows you to set the number of characters or words before it cuts off, but this is one setting for every excerpt. As far as I know there is no “read more” link ever when you have a post of only 30 words and the excerpt setting is for example at 35.

    I uploaded the whole plug-in folder, as it said in the readme, enabled it, but it isn’t working. I blog at https://rutsum.com

    I use WordPress 2.3.3.

    You’ve got the_content in the index.php and made your settings under “manage” and “excerpt editor”? Be sure to make your settings under “auto-generate” and use the “replace posts” tab.

    Under ‘Manage’, I don’t have a tab called ‘Excerpt Editor’. Neither do I know where ‘auto-generate’ or the ‘replace posts’ tab is.

    Did you download, unzip, upload and activate the plugin?

    Yes, yes and yes, of course! I just mentioned that. All that this plug-in added to my dashboard was a tab under the ‘Options’ called ‘Excerpt’. That is what the readme mentions! It doesn’t mention any kind of ‘Excerpt Editor’, ‘auto-generate’ or ‘replace posts’. I’m pasting the quote from the readme for you.

    == Installation ==

    After you’ve downloaded and extracted the files:

    1. Upload the complete advanced-excerpt folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory
    2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress
    3. Go to ‘Excerpt’ under the ‘Options’ tab and configure the plugin

    Are you sure you gave me the right link to the plug-in you were talking about? Are you sure that you are using the latest version of the plug-in you gave me the link to?

    For your satisfaction, I am adding screenshots too.
