Excerpts and the read more link

If I use an excerpt, there is no “read more” link on the front page. If I don’t use an excerpt, the theme posts an amount of the text and appends “read more.” I’ve added a more tag to the excerpt, but, still, no “read more” link. What can I do to get the “read more” to appear when I use excerpts? Thanks.
