excerpt instead of the full posts

Hi! I am very new to wordpress, trying to learn as much as possible.
Now Im having problems figuring out how to see only the excerpts on my Home page. I found out that i have to replace "get_content" with "get_excerpt" in index.php, but i dont have such a thing ??
Any help, please?
