Excerpt function not working – Store Box Theme

Does anyone here have experience with the store box theme by templatic? For some reason I can not get the excerpt to show up in the homepage. In the homepage I display an icon and then a brief description but I want it to use the description from the excerpt rather than from the the actual post. I have tried a few excerpt plugins but none of them seem to be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
