Excerpt feature not working

when I try to use the excerpt feature as outlined in your documentation such as this [expand title=”My Title Here” excerpt=”my text here”]my expanded content here[/expand], there is an excerpt generated but it’s not the intended text but rather an ID#xxxx string. It seems to work on the documentation site. Please help.
