    hi. another post from me.

I am using benevolence theme. my blog is textualife.com/blog

My question has to do with ‘excerpting’ posts. WordPress gives me the option to type some stuff in what it calls “excerpt” and then has another section below for “post.” I though that the way it would work is that when you type stuff in excerpt, it would show up first, and then have a link or something to the “full’ post… but when i wrote some stuff in “excerpt” and some stuff in “post” the excerpt stuff didn’t show up. Meanwhile, the whole “post” section did show up. How does this (excerpt) work?

  • the_excerpt works in this way:
it will appear ONLY in the templates that have the_excerpt tag in them – as opposed to the_content.
In “normal” themes the archive.php template for example uses the_excerpt, so on monthly and category archive listings there isn’t the whole post displayed.
Additional note: In cases like the one I described above WP will show:
    – either the text you typed in the ecerpt field or
    – the first 120 words if the field is empty

You may want also to consider using the <more> quicktag where you want to break your text – if it’s too long.

    Thanks!!
The More quicktag is exactly what I wanted but didn’t know it… that works!
