• An excellent free tool for tracking cookieless analytics, however not the most intuitive. My plugin collects links twice each time, plus appears to split the same user into different sessions, so not the most accurate. If you’re not a paid user, there’s no support other than a voluntary forum, where lots of answers go unreplied. To be honest that seems fair for a free tool, but it does mean parts of the plugin remain a mystery.

That said, I’ve been able to set-up and track tags, just as with GA, by following the tutorials on the developer’s site.

My WordPress dashboard has displayed Matomo diagnostics warnings since installation about charset and logs which I’ve never been able to fix, so getting a seamless experience may also depend on your hosting.

Edit – July 31, 2024: Seems fair that I add a star to my review. The plugin does have a steeper learning curve than some, but the free support I’ve received on this forum has been top notch.

Hello @aforumuser. Sorry to hear that you are having trouble using our Matomo for WordPress plugin.

Your questions are important to us, and we appreciate your patience as we strive to assist everyone efficiently.

Let me address the issues you are having with:

My plugin collects links twice each time
-can you please explain further what links are being collected twice?

appears to split the same user into different sessions,
In Matomo, it’s possible for the same user to appear as different sessions due to various factors:

    1. Session Timeout: If a user’s session remains inactive for a certain period (default is 30 minutes), Matomo might consider it as a new session when the user interacts with the website again.
    2. Campaign Attribution: If a user arrives at your website through different campaigns or sources (e.g., direct, organic search, referral), Matomo might track each visit separately, resulting in multiple sessions.
    3. Device or Browser Changes: If a user switches devices or browsers while interacting with your website, Matomo may interpret each switch as a new session.
    4. Tracking Code Changes: If there are changes to the Matomo tracking code on your website, such as updates or modifications, it could lead to the creation of new sessions for returning users.
    5. Cookies: Matomo relies on cookies to track user sessions. If a user deletes cookies or uses a browser in incognito/private mode, it can cause Matomo to interpret their visit as a new session.
    6. Ecommerce Tracking: This happens for example when a user visited your shop in the past, deletes all the cookies and then visits your shop again. It may also happen when opening the website in an “Incognito window” in your browser.

These factors contribute to the appearance of multiple sessions for the same user in Matomo analytics. It’s essential to consider these nuances when analyzing user behavior on your website.

My WordPress dashboard has displayed Matomo diagnostics warnings since installation
It would be best if you case to us these warnings and a copy of your system check report to [email protected] so we can investigate this further and find a fix for you.

I hope this information helps. Looking forward to your response.

Thank you for replying to my comment.

#1 Regarding links (Behaviour > Outlinks), almost all links are recorded as something like:

    clicks: 2

    unique clicks: 1

In other words, there are (almost always) double the number of clicks to unique clicks. Is that intentional, and what does it mean if so?

#2 Regarding visits split across sessions, I can see why there might be a number of factors, and accept it might not be possible to know further. I’m OK with that!

Thanks for your help. As I said, I think it’s an excellent tool overall – thanks for making it available.

I am currently seeking a plugin for our website that can help us track and gather detailed information about visitors from the United States. Specifically, we are looking for a solution that provides the following features:

    1. Real-Time Location Tracking: Ability to monitor the geographical location of US visitors as they browse our website.
    2. Contact Information Collection: Capture essential contact details, such as phone numbers, and social media profiles to enable direct engagement with our visitors.

Our primary goal is to enhance our customer engagement by understanding our US visitors better and reaching out to them effectively. Will this plugin help?

Hello @jyotideshmukh, Matomo does real time reporting functionality, including real-time location reports. You can see them on our demo:

Capturing contact information, however, is not something web analytics products do. For that you would want to use a CRM solution (Customer Relationship Management), which is where you would store contact information of customers/leads/etc.

In Matomo, you can then use User ID tracking (see https://matomo.org/faq/reports/analyse-user-id-reports/) and set the user ID to, for example, the user’s email address (while making sure to take any relevant privacy regulations into account). You would then use the user’s email address to cross reference data in Matomo with your CRM solution.
