Exactly What I Needed

You can’t beat a good, single-purpose plugin. This does exactly what it says it does and nothing more. I hope this one makes it into core someday as this is just how WordPress should work.

However, this almost deserves a 6th star as a couple of the functions were easily adapted to offer the same type of current-menu-item support for taxonomy term archives!
