Hi folks, there’s a UI bug in BLC where tab characters automatically appear around any text that’s saved in the Exclusion list. See screenshot linked above where I’ve selected all of the text in order to more clearly demonstrate the issue.

If a user enters one line of text in the Exclusion list, then tabs appear before and after the text on the one line.

If a user enters more than one line of text, tabs will be saved before the first line and after the last line of text.

I’m not sure whether this is merely a cosmetic problem because I’m not sure how to test the exclusion list, other than excluding something, and then waiting to see whether broken links appear.

If you know of a way to test the exclusion list and get definitive results, please let me know!

    Thank you,
    Joe

    Hello @redredweb ,

    Thank you for reporting this.
I have tested this issue and indeed in the field it displays with tabs. But I have also tested if that breaks excluding feature. And it is only UI issue, excluding words in link works fine, link with excluded word is not checked.

I will report this problem to the plugin’s developer so they can deal with it.

    kind regards,
    Kasia

Thank you, Kasia. How were you able to test this?

I’m being dense, and not able to think of a way to test a change to the exclusion list other than simply waiting for a day or so, or else completely re-doing the check of every link on the site, maybe?

    Hi @redredweb

You are actually right – you can either wait for links to be re-checked/re-discovered or e.g. add new link to the site (for testing) that would contain excluded words and the “Force re-check” (which would go through all the links discovery again from scratch).

I know it’s not a perfect way of testing, especially on a live site with a lot of links. Fortunately, we got some smaller/basic test sites at hand too so that’s why kasia was able to test it already on her setup.

It’s already reported to our developers so we’ll take care of it with one of the updates (though I don’t yet have an ETA, I’m afraid).

    Kind regards,
    Adam
