Ever thought about going back to square one?

    Dear Gutenberg Team,

    Just an “if” question for you:

    Now, that you are positive about the future of Gutenberg and will launch it as part of WP core, and a lot of people will convert their existing content to the new editing style manually (some of them may have sites of thousands of posts and pages), but if (I hate this if, but say, if it happens) one day, you find out that Gutenberg is not the right choice, just like TinyMCE, will it be another big change back to square one or to somewhere else, and how will users do it, with or without any tools to do it in a fast and reliable way?

    Hiya,

    So, TinyMCE, we actually believe it is the best editor out there, and we’re not getting rid of it. Gutenberg is a new editor interface, nothing more. It uses TinyMCE, any rich text block you see in Gutenberg is TinyMCE.

    As for content, you don’t need t convert existing content, it will keep working the way it is today, you can convert it if you’d like, and I’m sure some plugin will come along to automate that for your whole site (I don’t believe we’ll put that into core, but I could be wrong).

    Gutenberg lays a great foundation for future enhancements, I don’t believe we’ll see as big of a shift in things for some time to come. Of course it’s impossible to say what the future will bring, but WordPress is 15 years, and I’d be doing a disservice if I said for sure how things will be when it hits 30.

    In fact, I love the idea. It’s like taking the sentence as the basic unit for the whole book.

    And I know for sure that it would cut my long list of plugins a lot shorter and make the site run faster (I hope).

    Just another long long learning curve to take, and a lot of testing and customizing to try with the plugins I must have on my site.
