Events List widget not showing excerpt after latest update

For some reason I don’t see the first part of my question so I’m replying to this to add it:

I updated today to the latest The Events Calendar version (which fixed a previous conflict with our theme’s nav-menus.php, so thanks for that!). However, I noticed that our Event Lists widget is now showing nothing except the event title and the date, when it used to show the excerpt as well. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Hmm, the widget is not designed to show the excerpt. Is it possible the widget had been customized either by you or the theme developer in past releases and that were possibly overwritten on the latest update?

Oh yes, that is exactly what happened! I do recall fiddling with the plugin files and adding the code to show the excerpt. Is there a way to add that code in so that it won’t be overwritten by updates- like a child theme, except for a plugin? Thanks!
