I’ve received an automated WordPress message alerting me that the Event Calandar has created a fatal error on my site.

I can now only access my site via Recovery Mode.

This is what I see in the Plug In Description.

    An error of type E_ERROR was caused in line 1 of the file /www/wp-content/plugins/the-events-calendar/the-events-calendar.php. Error message: Uncaught Error: Function name must be a string in /www/wp-content/plugins/the-events-calendar/the-events-calendar.php:1 Stack trace: #0 /wordpress/wp-settings.php(431): include_once() #1 /www/wp-config.php(113): require_once('/wordpress/wp-s...') #2 /wordpress/wp-config.php(5): require('/www/wp-config....') #3 /wordpress/wp-load.php(50): require_once('/wordpress/wp-c...') #4 /wordpress/wp-login.php(12): require('/wordpress/wp-l...') #5 {main} thrown

I installed version 6 to see whether this would clear the issue but no change.

    Any assistance gratefully appreciated!

    Thanks
    Nick

  • Hey @nick777vvv

Yikes! We are sorry to hear about that error!
Without knowing more it’s a bit hard to know for sure what’s going on, so I have a couple of questions and suggestions for you.

    Questions

    • Just to confirm, you are saying that this issue was present before you upgraded to version 6.0?
    • Do you know what PHP version you are using? Please make sure it’s at least 7.2, but not higher than 8.0.x
    • Are you using any of our premium add-ons by any chance?
    • Is it possible that you have some customizations/overrides for the events calendar in your WordPress theme?

    Suggestions:

    1. Please try to test for conflicts in a staging copy of your site
    2. You might want to reinstall The Events Calendar from scratch (delete the plugin and reinstall it

Let us know how that goes,
    Geoff

    Hi Geoff

Thanks for your help above. Soon as I got your message I was travelling for a couple of weeks and didn’t get a chance to respond. However, things have gone from bad to worse…

My site is now down completely. My theme is missing, along with all plugins and all media. All that remains are posts and pages.

I’m going to need help to fix this but would welcome your view on whether this is an extension to the issue oulined above and whether you are experiencing others with similar issues. It seems hugely coincidental and I’ve made no backend changes to the site.

To answer your earlier questions, I’m not using premium add ons or customisations/overides. PHP is 7.4.30. I was using 6.0 before the initial fatal error occured.

Would appreciate your input on why you think this has happened and how best to fix it.

    Thanks
    Nick

Update. I have restored my site and all seems OK.

I’ve reverted back to 5.16.4. Hopefully if there are any glitches that caused the problems above, they’ll be ironed out in future releases of 6 and I’ll then update at a later stage.

Right now, I’m very cautious!I presume there is no downside to leaving 5.16.4 running?

    Hi @nick777vvv,

Apologies for the delay here, and sorry to hear about this. We’ve been trying to iron out the bugs with migrations to 6.0. We recently released v6.0.1, which should fix some of the migration errors. See if that fixes the issue you’re having here.

To be safe, we recommend testing the updates on a staging site before implementing them to your main website — and please keep a working backup of your website.

Moreover, there’s no harm with still using pre-v6.0. You could still use this version, 5.16.4, as it is still working on your end.

Let me know if that helps.

    Best,
    Abz
