Event Single 404

In the template where the thumbnail is inserted there is no link that I can tell (I’m using the page template linked to from the FAQ’s) but it adds a link around the image to the single event. That event comes back missing. I tried adding the template for the event single and named it (a few things) single-event.php, still I get a 404. So how can I remove the link on the image? Or how do I get the single to work? Either would be fine.
