I initially wanted to be able to add a simple search to the navigation menu for a client site. I discovered that not only could I add the search icon to a menu, but that I had many options to display and filter the search.
On top of that since the implementation for the general search (as opposed to the menu search) is via a shortcode, I used the “Shortcode in Menus” plugin to offer several filtered searches that search only certain custom post types and select pages in a submenu.
I’m going to be using this on most of my client sites in the future.

I had a problem using the shortcode for a search in a child navigation menu. Their support person Vinode was able to give me a CSS snippet that fixed it.
