    Background:

Around 2016 or 2017 I was in a google AMP study group, (I’ve no Tech prowess… No idea how I got invited). Based on reading and the study group my understanding is that to have an amp page you need all kinds of tricky stuff. Google provided it in the study group… but on my own it was way over my head.

I began using Amp for WordPress but recently had full page ads cover my content in both desktop and mobile. InMotion Hosting solved the problem by deactivating Amp for WordPress.

I was still getting a small amount of mobile traffic.

A few days ago I started getting a lot of traffic from cdn.ampproject.org….

But today there was none so I tried to use your plugin only I got very confused… I have a brain injury that doesn’t help.

    Questions:

Can you tell me how I can be getting cdn.ampproject.org traffic when I’m not using an AMP plugin…

and… most importantly, what can I do to get more cdn.ampproject.org traffic…?????

Keenly looking forward to your help,

    Karen Kline

  • Hi,

When you install the amp plugin, Google will cache your amp pages and serve these pages from its own cache. For this reason, the traffic source appears as cdn.ampproject.org. When you delete the plugin, your amp pages are removed from your site, but not from the google cache. It takes some time for it to be cleared from the Google cache. For this reason, even if you delete the plugin, it is normal to receive traffic from cdn.ampproject.org for a certain time since it does not delete the cache of google immediately.
Just use the plugin to get more traffic from here. Google will find and index your amp pages. You can submit your sitemap to for Google to find your amp pages more conveniently. This way you will get faster results.

    Hello @considerthis1,

I think @yazarmfa has done a great job explaining why you are still getting traffic.

Yes, Regarding more traffic from AMP I will recommend using the AMP WordPress plugin.

Regarding Ads covering the full page are those ads popup between link clicks? those might be Vignette ads, you can check your AdSense settings and check if you can disable them for now.

Feel free to share your site URL and Site Health information privately using this form so we can check your site and setup.

    Hi Muhammed,

Thank you. That was my first thought. But the whole time I used the Amp for WordPress plugin, I didn’t get cnd.ampproject.org referrals. I think that’s because in fact the plugin didn’t make my mobile pages faster than my desktop. The developers have an extension you can buy, and I did, to use their caching system, and that made my site fast. But, I think it also prohibited my site from getting to use the cdn.ampproject.org caching. I didn’t ever get the yellow lightening bolt.

Also, I stopped using their amp plugin over a month ago, around 11/10, at which time I was getting maybe one cdn.ampproject.org referral a day, as opposed to over a hundred a day for several days few days ago, before they dwindled back.

So, I don’t think it can be that.

Also, the mobile pages from my site that I see on my smart phone are not the same layout as my amp pages from Amp for WordPress.

    I remain mystified, and baffled.

What else do you think it could be?

And, if I begin employing this plugin, will I put the kibosh on the good fortune referrals from cdn.ampproject.org?????

    and

    HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE!!!!

    Hi Miland,

    Yes, they were vignette.

It took me ages to discover that. And I did disable them.

Actually, I didn’t use AdSense for years at the beginning of my site, nearly two decades ago, because their ads were mostly for the least effective kind of B12, but also the least costly to make and therefore the most profitable. Anyway, my priority is getting B12 info to people, not making money.

On the other hand, my AdSense earnings (when I have page views) greatly enhance my life.

Merry Christmas!!! I hope you are having a lovely day!!!!

    Hi again,
You run into issues like this because I think you are using AMP for WP plugin instead of the official amp plugin. If your theme is compatible I recommend using the official Amp plugin in standard mode. This way, most likely all your problems will be solved and you will be able to enjoy speed on both mobile and desktop.

    Hi Muhammed,

Standard sounds as if it is for developers and others with extensive coding experience.

I’m not using a compatible theme. I checked, first thing.

My cdn.ampproject.org numbers are back up today, not high… but somewhat as high as Pinterest in times past.

    still mystified!

    Hi again Miland,

I looked into the link you offered. I don’t feel as if my problem deserves that kind of attention… It was very kind of you to offer the link.

Here’s my website’s most visited page

See, I can’t even tell if the added link is the way it’s supposed to be, so I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to make the necessary changes if needed for verification.

With Amp for WordPress they always made the changed for me, probably for everyone.

The utility (? not sure that’s the right word? we used in the study group was super easy… I mean Super. We only had a choice of 3 different “themes”… I can’t remember if we had to enter our sites page by page… I think we entered our site’s name and then it created an amp version. Then, as I remember it, the only way to get it to refresh was to add a post… my site would be all pages, but for those posts.

Yesterday I was going to change my theme to one of the compatible ones, on one of my smaller sites, but I don’t really understand if all the changes I made will convert since I didn’t do a child theme, and I get the impression you’re supposed to…

    What do you think?

I can not comment/provide support for AMP for WP plugin on their behalf, you may need to contact their support team for this.

Feel free to try the official AMP plugin and let us know if you run into issues.

If you are looking for AMP compatible themes we have listed themes and plugins on our website which are AMP compatible. Also, you may want to check our getting started guide.

if you are planning to add any customizations with coding, I will recommend using a child theme otherwise you won’t need a child theme.

    Hi Miland,

I don’t use Amp for WP anymore.

I looked at all the compatible themes. I couldn’t find one that matched my present page layout. Some of the older ones I tried a few years ago when the theme I was using, Montezuma, was no longer supported… and they didn’t work.

I’m so grateful to you for telling me how the update thing works for themes. I’m SO grateful. Thank you so much.

I hope you had a lovely Christmas and that you have a spectacular New Year.
