Error: XML declaration allowed only at the start of the doc

Hello – My site map will not generate, and the sitemapindex.xml page is displaying the following error message:
This page contains the following errors:
error on line 3 at column 6: XML declaration allowed only at the start of the document
Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.Sounds like it’s something to do with some extra lines at the top of the document. I’ve reinstalled the plugin, and deleted the files several times, same result. When I look at the .xml page code the code is starting on line 3 (skipping lines 1 & 2). This seems to be the issue causing the error. Some people talk about possible workarounds, but I’d rather know that things will not break during the next WP update, and that the plugin is working correctly. I’ve had Better WordPress Google XML Sitemaps working on my site in the past, but not able to get it working at this point.
