Regarding this answer on StackOverflow, what you experiencing is problem with qTranslate, not Posts-per-Cat.

As qTranslate have no updated “Compatibility” tag (Compatible up to: 3.8.3), remove that $before. variable suggested on StackOverflow, and all should start to work again.
