Hi – I’m getting an error ‘An error occurred. Please try again.’ when activating jetpack.

I have checked a few forums and one of the things seems to be to do with the xmlrps file. I have one here https://flexxgenix.com/wp/xmlrpc.php so that looks ok.

Can you suggest any other possible issues for me to check

    Thanks
    Martin

  • Hello @martinrtr

We cannot access your site’s XML-RPC file if it is set in another folder, which is needed for our connection:

    https://flexxgenix.com/xmlrpc.php?for=jetpack

The link above must return the following message:

XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.

You can see a working example here: https://jetpack.me/xmlrpc.php

Since your site returns a 404 “Not Found” error for this page, please check the following:

    * Can you see the /xmlrpc.php file at the root of your WordPress installation when accessing your site via FTP (if you’re not sure what this means, please ask your hosting customer support for a hand)? If you don’t, then please try re-installing WordPress. You can do this by going to the Dashboard → Upgrades page, then clicking the “Reinstall WordPress” button.

    * Do you use any security plugins that may block access to this file? If so, could you try to disable them? You might also want to check your site’s .htaccess file for any rules that might be blocking access to the xmlrpc.php file. Again, if you’re not sure what this means, your host customer support should be able to lend a hand.

    * Does your hosting provider block access to this file? If you don’t find any plugin that may block access to the file on your site, I would recommend that you get in touch with your hosting support and ask them to allow Jetpack to access xmlrpc.php.

Once we are able to access your site’s xmlrpc.php file, you should be able to connect Jetpack to WordPress.com:

    * **https://jetpack.com/support/reconnecting-reinstalling-jetpack**

Let me know if you have any questions.

    My best regards,

    Michelle

Thanks for your reply. I already read this post in the forums. As you will see I put the path to the xmlrpc.php file in the original post, but here it is again: https://flexxgenix.com/wp/xmlrpc.php I have many other sites successfully running Jetpack on this hosting using the same directory structure.

For the record I have re-installed JP and also cleared the server cache

Does this help – if not, where do we go next?

    Hello @martinrtr,

Thanks for the follow-up and the further information. I did some more tests and I found out that the site URLs entered in our system weren’t updated.

I did some changes, and hopefully, we have fixed that now ??
What I need you to do now is to cycle the Jetpack connection by deactivating Jetpack in your wp-admin dashboard at Plugins > Installed Plugins and then reactivating it and connecting to WordPress.com again.

More info on how to do that can be found here: https://jetpack.com/support/reconnecting-reinstalling-jetpack/

To stay on the safe side, double-check for any security/caching plugin you may have enabled, and try temporarily disable them, to see if it fixes the problem. You may also want to search for any firewall on your server-side that might be blocking the communication with the xmlrpc.php file – your host should be able to help you with that.

Let me know how you go, and thanks for sorting this out with me!
