Hi Li-An, it’s great you have a test site.
It looks some of your image files are missing. And I checked the Auto Smart Thumbnails code. It deletes only thumbnail files of the custom sizes and temporary files it generated when things go wrong. And all these deletions are logged if you turn on the debug logging feature. This is the beauty of this plugin. I love it.
As said, it won’t delete your original image files. To double check, you can activate the plugin and check ‘Log debug info for troubleshooting’ in ‘Settings -> Auto Smart Thumbnails’. Leave the plugin activated and the setting on, and then do your testing.
When there is info logged, you will see a button ‘Get Debug Log’ in ‘Tools -> Auto Smart Thumbnails’. You will see such log info:
“#5 deleted size: $size, file: $file” (custom size and file name deleted)
Following image files are missing:

2019/02/lais-ribeiro-by-zoey-grossman-for-fae-swim-spring-summer-2017-lookbook.21-1.jpg
But check the uploads/ast-backup/, your will find following files. These are your original image files that the plugin saved when downsizing.
2018/08/a0334275141_10.jpg
2019/02/lais-ribeiro-by-zoey-grossman-for-fae-swim-spring-summer-2017-lookbook.21-1.jpg (2.7M)
2018/12/avion-disparu-delamare-01.jpg (3.7M)
Fortunately, the result of downsizing of 2018/12/avion-disparu-delamare-01.jpg is still there (retest-pour-voir). The file was downsized from 3.7M (2204×2909) to 495K (1102×1455). That means the plugin was working.
It’s interesting to dig out why the missing files were gone. Can you restore the files, turn on debugging and give it a shot? ??
