When attempting to log in to my wordpress site an error labeled.
    “Error thrown

Cannot create references to/from string offsets”
I am running php version 7.1.1, This seems to be some sort of php error. The website itself still functions. Has anybody had this issue or found any solutions? I was not able to find what I was looking for in the forms or anywhere on google. I do have shell access to the entire server to try things.

    Thank you,

    Ethan

What did you do before this error started?

Nothing, I just went to log in to a site that a customer requested a change on. I have not logged on in months. I am assuming php may have been updated in that time period however.

    Have you tried:
manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause. Also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder (if you have created such folder). The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old.
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Seventeen.) for a moment using FTP/ SFTP , or your web-host’s cPanel or whatever file management application your host provides (no Dashboard access required). Navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and switch to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder by adding “-old” to the end of the folder name. Alternately, you can remove other themes except the default theme (Twenty Sixteen.). That will force your site to use it.
    – If above steps fail, try MANUALLY updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old wp-admin and wp-includes folders and files on your server before uploading the new ones. Please read the Manual Update directions first.
Backup: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. You can never have enough backups!

Had to manually install the new version of wordpress then update the database. Problem resolved. Thank you.
