I installed the free version of Smush yesterday and have repeatedly tried today to bulk smush (I know there’s a 50 limit) on a website but every time the process does some of the 50 batch but then fails with this error:

Error posting to API: cURL error 6: Couldn’t resolve host ‘smushpro.wpmudev.org’

I have contacted my ISP and they do not block any outgoing connections from plugins, and quote that “many of our customers do use Smush successfully. So I suggest contacting the developer of the plugin and requesting a fix.”

I also have another site where the automatic smushing worked this morning with a number of new image uploads but it stopped working 2 hours ago and 2 new images are now sitting in the Library with Smush Now! button displayed.

I see that this error occurs frequently with Smush from previous posts here and in other forums. Is this an error that means your servers are overloaded or is it a bug?

    Hello zimbo000,

I’m sorry for delay with answering your question – that error should be a temporary issue and should be already gone. Can you tell me if this is still showing on your site?

    kind regards,
    Kasia

The smush eventually completed after a number of days and multiple re-tries, very frustrating…

Can you advise – for future reference – if this error was a problem with your servers?

And if it happens again (as noted before there are a number of internet posts going back a while about this error message) what should I do? Just wait? Report it again to you?

    Hi @zimbo000,

There could be some hiccups with connecting to our servers in case of large number of requests but it certainly shouldn’t last for that long.

We’re constantly working on improving both the plugin and servers so if you do encounter this issue again please let us know about it.

    Cheers,
    Predrag

    Hi

This problem has occurred regularly again over the past week.

I’ve uploaded 3 images today over the course of one hour. The first failed to auto-smush on upload, the second 35 minutes later did auto-smush but another 15 minutes after that also failed to auto-smush.

Of 13 images uploaded yesterday only 6 auto-smushed. Same on other days – only some of the images uploaded get auto-smushed.

    Hey @zimbo000,

What hosting you’re on? We haven’t got many reports regarding the same issue, so it’s probably related to particular hosts. If you could please provide the details about your web server.

    Cheers, Umesh

I am hosted with a company in the UK called LCN – https://www.lcn.com/

All I know is that it’s Apache based.

The problem still exists now, nearly 3 hours after reporting above – I still can’t smush.

Is there some debugging I can turn on to get some more info to assist?

    Hey @zimbo000,

Sorry for the extreme delay in response. Did you happen to contact your hosting provider and tell them about the issue?

They can probably help you out with that.

Let me know the response you get from them.

    Cheers, Umesh

    Hi

First thing you should know is that the error happens on quite a regular basis. I keep finding images that are not auto-smushed as they should be.

And yes I did raise it with my hosting provider and they said that error is a DNS problem, is nothing to do with my hosting and is a problem at your end, in that requests to your server can’t be resolved i.e. we sometimes can’t find your address/server on the internet.

    Hi Zimbo,

Thanks for the info from your host, we have forwarded this to our sysadmins so they can see what could be improved from our end.

These issues are usually temporary and it’s strange that they kept happening to you so often, hopefully sysadmins will be able to figure out the cause.

    Cheers,

In the past week 120 images have been uploaded to the website, usually some every day at various times. I’m the webmaster but have been away during this period. On checking today, 13 of the 120 did not auto-smush on upload and I’ve just had to do a bulk smush on them now.

Say 5 images are uploaded in one go – when auto-smush doesn’t work, none of the 5 get smushed indicating that your server is unavailable for a period of time, i.e. it’s not as if 2 of the batch of 5 get smushed, none of them do.

There’s no consistent time of day when I can say to you that auto-smush doesn’t work, it seems to happen at random times. The only help I can give is that we are based in the UK and would upload images during our working day – 9 am to 5 pm, sometimes later, but rarely later than 7 pm.

    Hello @zimbo000,

I’m very sorry for the delay. Can you let us know if the issue still occurs on your site?

if this is still happening can you ask your host how long they cache DNS?

    kind regards,

It did keep happening for a month or so after my previous post but it has not occurred for the past couple of weeks or so.

    Hello,

I know this thread has resolved but can someone explain to me is it the error 6 same as error 7?

In my case, the error show like this:-

Error posting to API: cURL error 7:

Maybe someone can check my blog – https://naziman.com/. I just change hosting provider and maybe that reason. If that the reason, please let me know, I will contact hosting provider immediately.

    Hey @naziman,

    Hope you’re well.

That error means there is a connection problem. There can be a firewall or any other thing that blocking the remote connection. So, can you ask that to your hosting provider?

    Cheers,
    Oguz

    Hey Oguz,

Sorry, I forgot to answer you. My problem was solved. You are correct, it’s because of the firewall that blocking IP.
