  • Enable logging under the payment gateway settings.

Replicate the error, then goto WooCommerce->System Status, Logs tab and choose the paypal express log in the dropdown. Then scroll to the bottom of that log.

I had the same problem, turned out to be the checkbox for forcing billing address. Disabled that and it was all good.

    Hope this might help!

    Hi John,
    in PayPal Express Checkout
“Billing address – Require buyers to provide their billing address” is already disabled.

    The error code is: 3
And long message is: An error occurred while trying to connect to PayPal: Operation timed out after 5001 milliseconds with 0 bytes received.

    Hi digitalup!

A timeout when trying to connect to PayPal is often caused by a conflict with another a plugin such as a security plugin. Can you try to reproduce the error with only WooCommerce and PayPal Express Checkout enabled?

    Digitalup,

Are you sure about the error code? I’ve never seen a single-digit PayPal error code:

I would do as Mike says and test with plugins disabled(this can also be caused by a broken SMTP plugin).
