Hello, since moving my site over to WordPress, I’ve often received an error message when I try to make updates, especially when I update blog posts.

The error message says, “Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 6281761 bytes) in /home4/willowpaule/public_html/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1171”

When I searched here in support, it looks like I should disable plugins and see if they are the culprits. Is it also possible that the theme itself could cause this error?

I am on a shared server, and I asked my host to increase my server memory from 56mb to 256mb. That should be enough, right? They seemed to think so.

    Plugins:
    Akismet Anti-Spam
    Contact Form by Supsystic
    Easy WP SMTP
    Ecwid Shopping Cart
Google Analytics for WordPress by MonsterInsights (Currently turned off)
    Insert Headers and Footers
    Photo Gallery (Web Dorado)
    Ultimate Landing Page
Under Construction / Maintenance Mode From Acurax
    Users Ultra Lite
    WordPress GitHub Sync
    WP Smush
    WP Statistics
    Yoast SEO

Since this has been happening (almost 99% sure with same exact error message) since the beginning of being hosted, should I look at closely at plugins that were installed in the beginning, or does this point more to it being a theme issue? Thank you for your help in advance!

    Try:
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Seventeen.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue.

    Hello t-p (@t-p),

Thank you for your helpful suggestion! I found the culprit, I think. It’s a plugin called: WordPress GitHub Sync. It appears it was something my web-designer used to set up my website–and I wonder if it is still serving a purpose. Do you think it will hurt anything to deactivate/uninstall it?

When I got the error message after reactivating WordPress GitHub Sync, it had a different line number. Is that only because there were a different number of plugins selected at that time versus at the beginning?

I went through the rest of the plugins and they didn’t seem to cause the memory problem.

Glad to know got it sorted ??

As far WordPress GitHub Sync plugin is concerned, I have no idea why your web-designer used it.

You can deactivate it and monitor your site for any side-effects. It’s possible You may not see any side-effects.
