error message when clicking on Woocommerce Place order button

I use a theme with woocommerce on a French website, and I am facing a strange issue.
Most of the time, the checkout process works alright
But on 5% of the orders, when clicking on the “Place order” button on the checkout page, the customer gets an error message, saying in French “characters are not valid for this field”, and he does not reach the Paypal page.
The last customer was using Internet Explorer 11. We made him change for Chrome and then it went alright. We tried to reproduce the problem with explorer 11 but it worked. The problem is that this case is not isolated…Any idea on how to solve this issue ?
