• What’s the solution to this message.

    I have a free template from freewptemplates.net
    I applied to the site.

It works fine on the index (home) page, but when I previewed it, it came up with this error message.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in /home/bizbox/public_html/ThaiBistroDemo/wp-content/themes/distillate/page.php on line

Is there a way to fix this problem?

  • I don’t really understand what you mean by these two things:

“It works fine in the index page”

“When I previewed it it came up with an error”

Are we talking about the same page here? What do you mean by “previewed”?

The error suggests you were accessing a static page when the error occurred.

    Apologies. I’ll clarify

I was creating a new page using the template ‘distillate 2’ from freewptemplates.net

The works fine for the home (index) page, but when I clicked on the ‘preview’ after where it says ‘draft saved’ the new page that I had made, the error message came up.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in /home/bizbox/public_html/ThaiBistroDemo/wp-content/themes/distillate/page.php on line

Don’t you have to publish the page in order to view it?

I don’t think so. There is a preview page button that supposed to show you what it looks like before publishing. BTW, I did a publish attempt. Same message came up. I removed the page.

I am somewhat of an “old dog (FrontPage)” trying to learn a “new trick (WordPress)” so I need all the help I can get.

    Appreciated.

There’s got to be something wrong with your theme installation then. I’ll download the theme to my test site and see how it behaves.

I’m assuming you haven’t changed anything to do with the theme.

One thing you could do in the meantime is to activate one of the default themes, twentyeleven or twentyten, and see if you have the same problem with them.

BTW, don’t mention F****P*** on any forums or mailing lists where you might talk to Web development professionals. Reactions can be—erm—unpredictable.

    ??

I’ll post again when I’ve found anything out, so make sure you have the “Notify me of follow-up posts via email” box checked if you want to be notified.

Works fine on a clean install as far as I can tell:

    • Installed the theme
    • Went to Pages –> New Page
    • Entered title and some text
    • Clicked on preview (before saving or anything)

    Everything worked just fine.

So, my guess is that you either have something wrong with the theme installation, or a plugin is interfering somehow.

I’d deactivate all your plugins and then try again. If that fixes it, you can reactivate your plugins one-by-one to see which one causes the problem.

Did you get a chance to try it out with one of the default themes?

If it works with other themes but not with this theme with all plugins deactivated, and whilst some other theme is active, I’d deactivate this theme and completely expunge it from the server. Then I’d install it again, activate it and see if that mends anything.

    Cheers
