error making patch

hello my wordpress is located at ~/WordPress and inside there is the directory trunk. i removed a comment in index.php to test out diff and so i go up to a directory to WordPress and run svn diff index.php > index.diff and i get a blank .diff file and output that says index.php is not a working copy? what is wrong with my setup?
