• Over the last few days my blog error logs show “file not found” errors for wp-signup.php

    Any idea why?

I don’t believe I changed anything before it started (no plugin updates, etc.). I’m using WP2.9.2 on my own server.

I looked up a few of the IP addresses shown on the errors and they seem to be hosting company IPs (GoDaddy and 1&1 for example).

    Thanks in advance.

  • Have you checked to see if this file exists in your root WordPress folder?

No, the file doesn’t exist and I don’t know if it ever did. It’s not included in the download for 2.9.2.

The question is why would there suddenly be a “demand” for that file when there never was before.

    Thanks.

It’s included in WP 3.0. Did you try to upgrade at any point?

I have not tried to upgrade. I’m not quite ready to do that.

When there’s unusual activity like this on my blog I’m suspicious about who is looking for something and why. Since the file is included in 3.0 perhaps people or bots are looking for blogs that are running 3.0. Just guessing.

Sounds like it’s probably not some new issue with my blog, so if it continues, I can take steps to stop the error reporting (like redirect the file perhaps?).

    Thanks.

Yes, there are spammers looking for that file trying to sign up for a blog *IF* you were running a network of sites in 3.0.

Thanks. Guess I just won’t worry about it then.
