I’ve had this on a multisite for several years, but suddenly (not sure if it was an update) it decided not to allow us to pass the 2FA, saying

    ERROR: Invalid login credentials.

This means me, as the admin, can’t log into any network sites. Nor can any of the other users.

We use this multi-site to manage several small websites that help our organization. And right now, we’re very much out of luck. No one can log in to get the necessary documents, information, contacts, etc. And obviously, I can’t log in as admin to disable it.

What would be next steps here?

Hi @taddmencer01, thank-you for your message.

This could be a cache issue or a plugin conflict. If you have a captcha plugin, or other login-related plugin, that would be best to check first. Does disabling all other plugins except for Wordfence Login Security, and reverting to a default theme fix the issue? If it does, re-enable your plugins & theme on a one-by-one basis to see when the issue reoccurs and let me know.

I have seen other users with this issue being able to enter their password with the 2FA code appended to the end in the password field, so you can log in for now as a temporary workaround. For example, if your password is “MyPa55w0rD” and the 2FA code for right now on your Authenticator app is “224564”, then type “MyPa55w0rD224564” (without quotes) into the password field.

You can also log in by using FTP/SFTP (or any file manager your web host provides via their administration panel), look inside the /wp-content/plugins/ directory and rename the wordfence or wordfence-login-security directory to have “.bak” on the end (without quotes). This will deactivate Wordfence’s Login Security element and allow you to login without the 2FA code.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
