After creating empty database and unzipping clean new wordpress, when I open it in browser, instead of normal install prompt I get “Error establishing a database connection”, before I get the chance to enter database details and before config.php is created at all.

It’s on my localhost (wamp), and currently 6 different wordpress instances are working fine on it, all installed normally, in last few months, and nothing on wamp was updated. I even tried installing from 4.7 and 4.6, same error appears, which means something apparently did change in my server setup. Also, no php or apache errors.

Any idea what might be the trouble? Or how to debug this?

  • You already have wp-config.php file in that folder?

Yup, I just found one, not in folder containing new wordpress, but one level up. I deleted it and the install works fine. I must’ve copied config from some of those other wp installs as backup and forgot it there. I had no idea that wordpress reads config.php from parent folder too.

If WP can’t find wp-config.php it will look one directory up. Some folks like to hide their wp-config file.
