• Hello all!
I am running into some serious trouble and seek your almighty help.

I moved my two websites (both WordPress) to a new hoster. One site works perfectly, but for the other I cannot reach the backend.

I copied the database to the new provider, copied all the data to the new FTP, changed settings in the wp-config file… and it worked perfectly for the first site but not for the second.

I already recopied all the data a second time but it did not work.
    Checked usernames, password, hostname again…

I still get the same error:

    Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

What else is there I can do?
    Thank you so much!

Your FTP and database credentials are unique to the hosting provider you are with. They are like keys to a house, when you move your belongings to another house you are given new keys by the providers.

Hi @anevins Thanks for your quick reply.
As I already mentioned I checked the DB credentials multiple times and they are correct for that website.
I moved both sites the same ways (with their own initial databases as well as correct credentials) but only one works and the other doesn’t. So it must be something else.

I could try moving the website a third time (already tried a second time) but I doubt that might magically work after the third time?

I’d really appreciate any hint in what direction I could go next. ??
    Thanks.

If you have not, also discuss this issue with your new hosting provider.

They really are not. That message means that it tried to connect to the database with them and failed. So the credentials are wrong, somehow.

No other explanation works. Find the right values and correct the credentials in the file.

I recommend focusing on the website that has the issue and not comparing it with the website that’s not broken. Comparing your working website introduces an unnecessary level of complexity in finding out the underlying issue.
