Just started the loading process of wordpress onto me server (hostDime). I downloaded the files, created a database using MySQL, added a username and password (different from my login for the server), changed the info in wp-config.php, checked with my provider to make sure what the “hostname” was (localhost).

I’ve even tried deleting the database and recreating it with different login, then changing everthing to match in wp-config.php.

the next step is to go to wp-admin/install.php, but I keep getting the same error page. error is as follows:

    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

    * Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    * Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    * Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

    any suggestions?

If you are certain the DB_NAME, etc is correct in your wp-config.php then check with your host to CONFIRM that information and confirm that the database server is in fact operational.

I am having exactly the same problem.

I’m installing on my local machine and the server is localhost

the username and password is right…and ideas?

Review the Installing WordPress on your computer section in Installing WordPress. On my local box using XAMPP my password is blank.

    Hi,

Depressingly, I’m having the same problem and no matter what I try, even restoring my database, repairing it or even erasing everything and starting new and even to the wordpress file on my cpanel instead of as my website name being the blog itself doesn’t change the result that we have.
My server is localhost and my username and password I’ve inputted and still the same result. Very VERY frustrating – and unfortunately the support “troubleshooting” doesn’t address this either.

    Hi,
I didn’t give up, and although I lost access to my previous old version of WordPress and it’s database ?? . I did finally get 2.7 up and running. Even after reloading everything, I still got the same “error establishing a database connection” message. I went back in and paid very close attention to the details in doing those “simple” 4 steps. Really they’re simple once you know what to look for as mistakes you may have made.

You can visit my new wordpress blog over at https://www.TrueWealthParadigmBlog.com/blog and review the exact same step by step process I used to get yourself up and running. Hope this helps.

truewea2 – so essentially you reinstalled WordPress and you made sure to follow the instructions in Installing WordPress.
