Within a week, backups to all the sites I manage started to fail with the following error:
ERROR: S3 Service API: Error retrieving credentials from the instance profile metadata server. When you are not running inside of Amazon EC2, you must provide your AWS access key ID and secret access key in the "key" and "secret" options when creating a client or provide an instantiated Aws\Common\Credentials\CredentialsInterface object.
When I checked the BackWPup settings, I saw that the Secret Key field was empty and Bucket selection displayed “Missing secret access key!”

Re-entering the secret key let me select the bucket and folder, but the backups still failed.

I then logged into AWS and created a new access/secret key pair, which fixed the problem. I don’t know if Amazon invalidated the old key (no mention of anything like that on AWS).

Posting here to help those who experience the same issue and trying to identify the source of the issue, especially since it occurred around the same time on multiple sites using different servers and different AWS accounts.

    Hi @eric3d
Thank you so much for your report, this definitely help others!
For other users have this kind of S3 issue, please check the following:
    – Check if your key has been invalidated by Amazon as Eric mentioned above.
    – Check if your site has activated any Amazon related plugins. if yes, disable the plugin then try the backup again.
