I just wanted to update to the newest version (Sorry I don’t know the actual wp version) and it didn’t work automatically. Therefor I tried it manual by FTP.
Now the site doesn’t show anymore (!!) and this error occures:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected end of file in /home/dastichtin/domains/stichtingdestad.com/public_html/wordpress/wp-includes/functions.php on line 5183

    site:www.stichtingdestad.com

Unfortunately I logged out from the wp-admin and I cannot login anymore.
    What to do??

First I tried to reload the complete back-up files via FTP but I still get the error.

I already checked the functions.php to see if some ending bracket was missing….I didn’t see anything strange, but it is very hard to check this immense file for me as a ‘dummy’. Could I try to replace the functions.php file by the wp-update version of functions.php that I downloaded yesterday (and which looks very different), or is that to tricky?

    Please help!

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Hi James, I will try that!
What name should I give the folder of the actual theme?

    (@marloesk)

Resetting plugins Step 3: Login to your WordPress administration plugins page (/wp-admin/plugins.php) – this will disable any plugin that is “missing”.

I cannot login on my page the usual way via my browser. Is there another way? CAn I open the plugins.php file via FTP?

If the theme is named Example (for example), you’ll probably find /wp-content/themes/example/

    Just change that to /wp-content/themes/example-broken/

On resetting plugins, if plugins are the problem, you’ll be able to to do step 3 after doing steps 1 and 2.

If you still can’t do step 3, then move on to resetting the theme.

Ok, thanks. I will try resetting the theme. Should I first undo the plugin reset and name my it plugins again instead of plugins.hold?

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

I’d still leave the plugins renamed, just in case. If resetting the theme fixes it, you can name the plugins directory back to what it was.

hmm, no result yet. I renamed the theme-folder. Website still shows only the error message. Should I do anything to activate??? Any other clue??

Try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.

Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

    Hi James,

I just deleted the wp-admin and wp-includes folder and replaced it by the new downloaded wp files. No result yet. What should I do with the plugin folder in wp-content? Replace it as well? My current plugin-folder shows:
    ? disabel-xml-rpc-pingback
    ? wp-embed-youtube

No askimet plugin in my current plugin folder….

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

No, as mentioned don’t replace the /wp-content/ directories or the wp-config.php file.

Are you currently running any caching plugins, like W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache?

    Thread Starter marloesk

    (@marloesk)

I also uploaded the new plugin folder including the Askimet plugin.

Now anaother error occures when trying to open the site!!!

Fatal error: Call to undefined function apply_filters() in /home/dastichtin/domains/stichtingdestad.com/public_html/wordpress/wp-includes/load.php on line 316

    Any clue? I hope!

    (@marloesk)

No, I am not running W3 Total cache or others…
I did not replace wp-content files or wp-config. I only added the new plugin folder. Shall I remove this plugin folder again??

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

Keep the plugin folder renamed, and the previous theme’s directory renamed, and try replacing the core files with clean copies again.

The fact that the error moved after the core file replacement suggests that some of the files may have been corrupted, but that they weren’t all properly replaced.

Remember, some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

    Hi James,

The wp update finally succeeded! I can enter the wp-dashboard again. The site still gives error-codes. I think the theme (Lemonchili) is the cause of the trouble.
What to do? Contact Lemonchili for an update??
