After attempting to update to the latest version of WordFence, the system hung for a while, and then I got the message that said an update failed, and I needed to run the update again. When I went to the update page, nothing needed to be updated. When I looked at the plugins, it said I did have the most recent version of WordFence. I thought I’d try disabling the WordFence plugin, and then reinstalling it. The minute I disabled the plugin, I get white screen of death along with the following error message when trying to access any WordPress admin page:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 41943040 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7680 bytes) in [redacted directory structure]/wp/wp-admin/includes/update.php

If I delete the plugin folder (via FTP), everything works fine. I tried uploading the previous version of the plugin, and I get the same error. If I try a fresh install from the plugins admin area, I get the error once WordFence is installed.

I’ve seen the other threads about memory issues, but since I was able to run previous versions of WordFence with no problems, I’m guessing that’s not the problem.

Anyone know how can I fix this??

  • Hi JonathanB,
Please try disabling all your other plugins then install and activate Wordfence plugin and watch for any error message you may get, you can re-enable your plugins after that.

It could be a memory issue though (perhaps after installing many plugins or a new theme, your server is running out of memory), you can check any of these methods to increase your WordPress memory limit.

    Thanks.

    Thank you! That worked!

I disabled all plugins, reinstalled Wordfence, then after enabling the other 7 plugins I had (one at a time then tested), everything is working as before.

    Thanks again for the suggestion.
