    https://uniquejunktique.com

    Here is the code I added:

    add_filter( ‘the_author’, ‘guest_author_name’ );
    02
    add_filter( ‘get_the_author_display_name’, ‘guest_author_name’);
    03

    04
    function guest_author_name( $name ) {
    05
    global $post;
    06

    07
    $author = get_post_meta( $post->ID, ‘guest-author’, true );
    08

    09
    if ( $author )
    10
    $name = $author;
    11

    12
    return $name;
    13
    }

  • Hi,

    Please wrap pasted code within back ticks or highlight and hit the code button so that it displays the code snippets properly.

    So how did you change the functions.php file if you dont know how to use ftp.

    I would suggest you simply undo what you have done.

    I would also suggest if you dont know how to use ftp, then Id be reluctant to fiddle with more advanced WordPress things. So you have a lot of learning to do or hiring someone to do what you need.

    So its a simple answer. Look into and learn the “ftp thing” and learn more about WordPress to achieve what you want to do. Plenty tutorials online to help you out doing various things. Or simply pay someone to do it for you. Depends what you want to do with your time.

    First of all I would undo what I have done if I could gain access… DUH !

    I added the code through wordpress, exactly as it is posted…… not an FTP client like Cute FTP or whatever – I dont know how to do that as suggested in the forums in a similar post to regain access.
    So Yeah I did do some research and actually need some constructive help as my site is down.

    Everyone here is a volunteer, Your rude comments are neither constructive nor helpful. You ask for help and are rude to the first person who answers. Good luck with your problem.

    I wasn’t being rude, And I was being helpful. at least I posted a solution to the problem for others which I found on my own without assistance ( the link was posted and is now erased BTW – by an admin)….unlike the the responses I got which instead of getting help for…. I was in so many words being bullied for my lack of expertise., and told to go pay someone for help, and to stop fiddling with my site.
    This whole thing is a learning experience and people make mistakes along the way…. you would think you could get some constructive help in a forum when you find yourself in a jam.
    Instead I was forced into a few hours searching for the correct help I needed to fix it myself while my site was down.

    I’m sorry that you felt bullied junker01. I know in real life some people say to hire someone as an offensive term, but I don’t feel that was the case behind what @wptweaks said.

    A lot of the time people here mention to hire someone when the forums cannot help, and in @wptweaks’ case he did mention that situation before making that remark. It was a big ‘if’.

    I think the underlying issue was that you were using a commercial theme and that is usually beyond our help. Anything more than CSS or JavaScript issues requires knowledge of the theme, something we can’t get unless we pay for the theme. That is a reason why commercial themes aren’t officially supported by these forums.

    But it looks like you managed to get your issue resolved, that’s great to hear.

    Thank You Andrew,
    For clearing that up, I understand the theme situation and lack of knowledge for assistance with third party themes is understandable……

    I dont see where he mentioned that he could not help because of my theme, but here nor there anyway that theme problem was solved, via re loading the file through an FTP client.

    So for future problems related to my theme, I now know to go to the third party provider for help.

    Now onto another problem that is not theme related that I am currently experiencing as of this morning, but I will post that in another ticket.

    Thanks again Andrew for your concern, I appreciate your take on this matter.

    @junker01 I’m more than happy to help everyone, premium theme or not.

    So you used the editor to change the functions.php….I see. That’s all I was asking and all you had to answer with, no DUHS required. I was a little confused because normally you would have to create a child theme and upload it via FTP which is why I asked the question.

    So you didn’t know how to ftp. What did you want us to do, walk you through exactly how to ftp your functions.php file? A simple Google search and you would have found thousands of tutorials on how to do this.

    It seems that you followed my advise and solved the problem so why was it bad advise and as for bullying? Seriously. Trolling…I think you should look the definition of that up. Look at any of my other posts on these forums. I help people.

    I appreciate you are learning, we all have and we have all made mistakes but your original post seemed like you didn’t want to bother learning the “ftp thing”. Then you moan it took you hours to find the solution. To me it seems like you should have a sense of achievement for having a problem and getting yourself out of it.

    As Andrew says everyone answering posts here does it for free. For me its about giving something back to the community while I try and make a living from WordPress (no mean feat).

    Anyway don’t let my “bullying” hold you back from posting here for help. I’d always suggest researching it first before posting on any forum and asking for help. You think this forum is harsh try Stack Exchange.

    However I will be happy to help you in the future. It’s just the kind of person I am.

    @wptweaks I certainly did not say I did not want to bother, I said I did not know how to do it and didnt want to mess up anything further without advice.

    ?PLEASE HELP I dont know how to do the FTP file thing and I dont want to make matters worse by trying…

    I didn’t expect full on step by step directions on uploading the proper code via an FTP client, ( I was clueless about how or where to go to do that… now I know from my own research ) but a point in the right direction as to where I could find a tutorial at least or something might have been helpful as I stated.

    Instead I was told to pay someone, stop fiddling around and go find the answer to my solution elsewhere as I have alot to learn. How exactly is that helpful in any way whatsoever?

    “So how did you change the functions.php file if you dont know how to use ftp.

    I worked four years as a customer service rep, I know how to speak to an upset customer in distress and solve their problem… and that quoted text was not the way to handle it ..sorry I really must disagree.

    Yes I do have a sense of achievement to figuring it out myself, you are correct…. but certainly don’t take that as Me following your advice…. it was the only resort I had because I did not receive any help in the matter, and yes you are correct that in fact did require a bit of moaning and complaining believe me, because I was left hanging helpless like a little fish on a big hook flopping in the wind.

    If you would really like me to eat some crow, then please help me with the other problem that is wordpress and not theme related, that I am experiencing and posted above in the forum…

    yes I am calling you out on your last statement – ?that you would be happy to help me in the future because that is the type of person you are….. ?? Thanks so much I would greatly appreciate it.

    @junker01: Please do not try to use HTML within your posts here. At best, you risk turning your posts into unreadable noise (as above). At worst, you may completely wreck the formatting of the topic that you are responding to. Please stick with plain text.

    With regard to your complaints, this forum is staffed 100% by volunteers who give their time freely to help others. If you do not appreciate the advice you have been given here, then you are free to seek support elsewhere but please do not resort to name calling here.

    As your problem has now been resolved, I suggest we all now go on with our business elsewhere in a quiet and mature manner.
