entypo characters now messed up in 4.2

  • WordPress 4.2 broke my site (no more auto-updates after this fiasco).

    I had a bunch of glyphs using entypo that were all in a column, and all were same sized.

    Now some of them are unchanged, and some are displayed as images… The spacing is all wrong, and every page now looks horrible.

    Is this related to the emoji feature disaster in 4.2? I can’t see any way to turn it off, and surely installing a plugin can’t be the only solution here?
    Hope this gets quickly rolled back – what made people think this was a good idea to force every site to have their characters re-interpreted, and not offer a setting to turn it off?
