enqueing vs. linking javascript

Hi,
I am just getting started in javascript/jquery (so I don’t master the terminology and intricacies yet) and wonder if someone can explain in simple language why it is regarded “proper” to enqueue javascript files in functions.php rather than just adding the link to header.php?
