You are absolutely within your rights to review my plugin anyway you see fit. However, I will answer your review with this:

1. Your review has nothing to do with that actual functionality of my plugin.
2. My “huge permanent notification” was put there to allow my loyal users to continue using my plugin.
3. Did you spend hours upon hours upon hours writing code for others to use? Please stop for a moment and consider the plugin developers who give their time and work freely for webmasters across the globe. Do we not have the right to earn from our hard work?
4. Do you monetize your own WordPress site? If so, please do not be a hypocrite and judge me for monetizing my own work.
5. I have not done anything deceptively, nor have I disabled any functionality in the Lite version.

Sure it does. The reviews here are about users experience and that’s part of it.

2. My “huge permanent notification” was put there to allow my loyal users to continue using my plugin.

I’ve not yet installed the plugin (but I will shortly) but all admin notices must be able to be closed and stay closed.

Thank you for your effort and contributions to the WordPress community. Honestly, that’s appreciated though item number 2 is going too far.

There’s nothing wrong with supporting yourself and except for that admin notice, your plugin and efforts are very cool. While I don’t think it warrants a 1 star review myself, that’s the reviewers opinion and it does not need to be agreed by me or the author.

I have to ask. Is it better to offer users an upgrade path for a SEO critical plugin that I will no longer be offering free of charge or just stop updating and let them figure it out for themselves?

Except for the admin notice not being capable of removing, there’s nothing extraordinary about what you’ve done.

1. You didn’t remove any functionality (other authors have and that went spectacularly)
2. You didn’t just ask for the plugin to be removed from the WordPress repo (you could if you wanted to)
3. You informed your users about this plugin coming to it’s conclusion and why
4. You offered your users a means of continuing support via a different channel (paid)

None of that IMHO is deceptive or misleading and is aboveboard. Again, except for that one item there’s nothing to see here.

BUT! This review is about the user’s experience. That includes the admin notice and this user doesn’t like that. That’s fine and valid too.
