• I have a Norwegian site, but the letters ?. ?. ? stopped showing.

Encoding for pages and feeds is set to UTF-7 and what ever I do I can’t change it.

I think “iso-8859-1” is right for Norwegian, but since I can’t change it I can’t get it to work.

Any idea what may be the problem? Please help me!

    Thanks!

  • I think “iso-8859-1” is right for Norwegian,

That’s only half true… the “western” encoding is OK for your language but the default WP encoding (utf-8) is best for every language!

BTW, why did you change the default from utf-8 to utf-7?

I was trying out different “settings” and now I can’t change it back to utf-8. Every time I push update options and it says “Options saved.” It goes back to utf-7 ??

Do you mean it used to be utf-8 and it worked correctly… and after a while it just stopped displaying the correct character set? And what did your host say about it?

It used to be set to iso-8859-1 and worked fine. But after a while it stopped working and today i started trying out new settings.

If utf-8 is right, I want to change it to that. But now that i have plotted in UTF-7 by a “mistake” I can’t change it to anything else.

    So that’s my problem.

That’s very strange you cannot change it.

If your posts were written while the encoding was set to iso-8859-1 – do NOT chnage to anything else! All the old posts will look bad with wrong characters.
If you started with a certain encoding – you have to stick to it!

Worst case scenario: try to change back the encoding setting in the database.

Think I have to try: Worst case scenario :\

But I don’t know how to do it. Where could I find a easy guide to follow when doing this?

    Thanks for helping!

It should be in your database in the wp_options table (or whatever your prefix is).
There should be a line when browsing it, that says: “blog_charset” (in my DB is option_id 37)
    Edit its content.

There is a guide for editing another value, you can read it, the main idea and technique is the same:

Ok, found it and changed to UTF-8, but then the letters was shown as “?”.

I changed again to, iso-8859-1 and now the letters ?,? and ? shows in the titles of my posts, but not in the main text of the post :\ This is a STRANGE problem!

It is probably the result of your messing around with the encoding settings.

If you were writing posts while your settings were different than is-8859-1… you will have to re-write/re-save those posts!

BTW, your blog still tells me it has utf encoding.

The strange thing is, if I switch my browser to western – and go to this post:
    https://www.dillogdall.com/?p=165#comments
Your text doesn’t have any special characters, but the comments have. So, now I started thinking what are you doing wrong…

Yeah, I know! This is really strange! I don’t know what I’m doing my self, hehe!

    Damn this is strange…

If anybody know what I should do, please let me know!

As Moshu said, you might want to try editing the posts and re-save them. I don’t think you’d have to rewrite them but saving them might “reset” them so to speak.

Have tried it. In “Write Post” the letters show, but when posted on the site the letters disappears.

It’s strange that the letters shows in comments, but not in the main text of the article.

What about your browser’s setting? Is it set to some kind of encoding that forces to overwrite the visited site’s encoding? Put to auto-detect or whatever similar thing you have.

There is nothing like that in my browser and I have the same problem with the page on every PC and browser I have tried.

    I really don’t get this :\ There shouldn’t be a problem!
The letters ARE showing in the menu to the right and in comments etc… So there has to be something wrong with the encoding for the post I write!

You told me: “BTW, your blog still tells me it has utf encoding.” How did you check that? Could you give me a link to the page that checks it?
