I have a couple of blogs running on WP 3.0, currently as single sites (i.e. MULTISITE is not enabled and configured).

I need to add 2 or 3 blogs / subsites to these installs, so I am considering turning the installs into MULTISITE installs. However, I am not sure if this is the right thing to do.

the PROS I have come up with
    1. Having multisite will make it easy to maintain the 3 sites for upgrades and such.
    2. Logins can be shared (? is this true for MULTISITES?)

    the CONS
    1. Not all plugins work for MULTISITES, so I might potentially break some plugins I use/need and will have to wait for developer to fix it.
    2. Upgrading sites will have to be done 3 times, once on each install.
    3. Maintenance also (like backups etc) will have to be done 3 times (for 3 sites).

Can you tell me what would be a good choice for something like this, i.e. should I switch to MULTISITE or should I continue with 1 single WP install per site?

    thank you
    -Shiva

You mean if you have an account on Site 1, can you use that on Site 2? Yes.

    Most do, though, surprisingly.

Incorrect! Upgrading sites happens ONCE ?? You upgrade to WP 3.0.1 and the upgrade happens one time. Now it will prompt you to update each site’s database tables, but that takes a couple seconds and is pretty automated. It’s broken up so that people with a lot of sub-sites don’t kill their servers.

Maintenance/Backups are done but once as well. it’s only one database to download for most people ??

    Thanks Ipstenu!

So given all this, what would you recommend? For a “website” / wordpress install that needs only 3 – 5 separate “sites”, and not a full fledge Multi-user blog site like wordpress.com.

    1. Should I stick with installing 3 or 5 separate WP single user sites, or
    2. Should I enable the MU on the 1st install and setup the rest as MULTI-SITES or
    3. (this just came to me) should I just change the table_prefix on the configs, so they all use the same DB, and set them up as separate single user WP installs?

    thank you

Hell, I’d just use MultiSite. Less upgrade hassle for ME ??
