Enabling Memcache slows down site by 10 times

  • Brand new WP 3.8.1 install, Nginx + PHP 5.5.9

    Page generation times:
    BaseCache: 0.08-0.09 sec
    FileCache: 0.07-0.11 sec
    MemCache: 0.24-1.8 sec (!)

    Some requests also “hang”, sometimes they just time out after 60 seconds. (PHP timeout.)

    There seems to be a severe problem with my stack and this plugin. Can you help with solving this issue?
