Enable Theme for Widgets?

Hi there,

I’ve just begun coding a new theme, and I’ve never done this before. I need some insight into enabling my theme to support widgets. Most of the tutorials I’ve found are for adapting existing themes.

I’d like to know what I need to do to start it off in the beginning.
