Enable multisite on XAMPP/local dev, switch to subdomain for live prod. site?

  • What I want to do is figure out the most viable and secure way to enable multisite on my local XAMPP development WP installation, then when I transfer that to a live host/upload it to web, switch the URL configuration from subfolders to subdomains.

    First of all, I’m unsure of whether this is even possible to do directly. High hopes, though. If anyone could shed some light on this, preferably from experience, I would greatly appreciate it.

    (Sorry if this is posted on the wrong board; wasn’t sure if it belongs in Installation or not.)

    On second thought, as a possible alternative if need be, can I set up a subdomain to separate one part of my regular, single-site WP install from another? Sorry I haven’t done much production, mostly just been messing around in development, rusty on these topics.
