I had about 2000 images registered as not used in a theme that is used by many people over a period of ten years.

First, identifying images not in use takes a while, but not that long.

But, when it comes to delete the images, it took a long time (maybe an hour).

The big surprise came when I wanted to empty the trash. A simple operation of removing a row in a table and deleting the file from disk, for 2000 items, has now taken about ten hours!

Why does it take that long?

PS: Likewise, the Media File Renamer takes a long time. Maybe five seconds per file. No other plugin works this slow on my site.

    Hi,

Unfortunately for me, I am working on very specific plugins which are doing very specific tasks, and very expensive. At the same time, it makes them unique, and many people realize the work it represents, which is why they are relatively popular.

I don’t know many other plugins running such intense processes. In fact, nothing comes to mind; maybe a backup plugin, but that is only about upload speed, they don’t do any kind of processing, updating, or analysis.

Media Cleaner does look into everything in your install, decode things when need to be. I guess you are not a developer otherwise you would probably know why ??

I worked on it for years to make it faster, but I probably reached the limit of what I can do now. A lot of developers (some of my users) have also helped me over the years to make it faster. If the process could be improved by elegant and amazing coding techniques, I would be up to pay that developer a lot, trust me ?? And I am even open to talk to some developers if they think they can.

The Renamer does something different, but when a file is being renamed, it needs to look for the URLs to update in your whole install as well. If you have a lot of content, and your DB not that fast, it takes time. But if you disable the Side Updates, the process will become instant.

    Have a nice week-end,
    Jordy.
