• Dear team,
Lately I have been looking for an easy way to create my own template.
Ran upon all kind of (free) Page builder plugins which look good. The only downside of using such a Page builder is that one never knows what happens if your license is expiring and you don’t want to continue with that plugin/service. A Page builder uses mostly its own plugin(s) and widgets. So if you remove the page builder plugin, the widgets will not work as well.

So to prevent evt issues, I think all I need is an empty template with multiple widget positions (the more the better). The plugins that I then use I simply download from the online WP plugins. With that I think I have a better independent website.

Can someone tell me if my idea is a no-no or are there some geniusses out here who can help me to invent this wheel again?-)

The issues you raise and how they might be addressed is the main reason the block editor (Gutenberg) was developed. Creating such an editor is a major undertaking, it’s not something to take on casually. The key feature is without the editor in place on a site, the page content still displays in a reasonable way. You’re free to develop your own editor just like other page builders have done, but I’d think hard about getting the block editor to meet my needs before developing my own editor.

The block editor is extensible, I recommend working within that structure instead of starting over.
